Dear friends, what a sad reality!
It’s incredible the negative impact that plastic has on our planet. Besides being one of the most common materials in the world, its presence is so omnipresent that even seemingly remote places like the Mediterranean are falling victim to its invasion.
The study conducted by the National Research Council highlights how the Mediterranean, once known for its beauty and biological richness, is turning into a true “plastic soup.” The research points out that the waters of the Mediterranean host an incredible amount of plastic, with some areas recording up to 10 kilograms of plastic per square kilometer on the surface. This is a clear indicator of the urgent need to address the plastic problem globally and immediately.
If we don’t radically change our approach to plastic production, use, and disposal, the situation will only worsen. Projections indicate that if we continue on the same path, by 2050 we could have up to 34 billion tons of plastic in our environment, with at least 12 tons of plastic waste scattered in every corner of the planet. These data are alarming and tell us that we must act now. It is essential to promote recycling, reduce the use of disposable plastics, and develop sustainable alternatives.
